On Etsy, a SKU (stock keeping unit) is a short code you create to identify one exact product or variant — for example a candle in lavender, 200 ml. It is not a barcode, and Etsy does not assign it for you. It is your own shorthand so you, packing helpers, and inventory tools know which item a sale refers to.
What SKU means on Etsy
When you create or edit a listing, Etsy lets you add a SKU for the listing or for each variation (size, colour, scent). Buyers usually do not care about the code. You use it when packing orders, matching stock, exporting sales, or keeping the same product tidy across Etsy and another shop.
If a necklace comes in three chain lengths, each length should usually get its own SKU. If every piece is truly one-of-a-kind, you can still use a simple code per listing, or leave SKUs blank until your range grows — but a light system early saves confusion later.
SKU vs GTIN (barcode)
A SKU is internal to your business. A GTIN (UPC/EAN-style barcode) is a registered global product number used for mass-manufactured goods. Most handmade makers do not have GTINs. Etsy SKUs do not replace barcodes, and you should not invent fake GTINs.
A simple SKU system for makers
Keep codes short, consistent, and readable by a tired human after a market weekend. One workable pattern:
Category or craft + product + variant. Example: CND-LAV-200 for candle, lavender, 200 ml. Or JWL-RING-SIL-6 for jewellery, ring, silver, size 6.
Write the pattern down once. Reuse the same codes when the same product appears on Shopify or elsewhere so stock and sales stay comparable.
Do you need SKUs for one-off pieces?
If you never remake the same item, a unique listing title may be enough day to day. SKUs still help when you run sales reports, use shipping tools, or sell the “same” design again later. Many makers use SKUs for repeatable lines and simple codes (or none) for true one-offs.
Common mistakes
Changing the SKU every time you edit a listing. Using the product title as the SKU (too long and fragile). Reusing the same SKU for different sizes. Putting customer-facing marketing words in the code instead of a stable identifier.
How this ties to listing less
A clear SKU makes it easier to keep product facts together when you sell in more than one place. DistroBay is built so you describe a product once and keep listings updated without retyping everything — including the identifiers you rely on behind the scenes.
